My time as a Safety Manager I continually had issues with workers not following the SWMS, not wearing the correct PPE and not having the correct PPE. The Client would kick the workers offsite and shortly after that we had a please explain from to why your workers should be allowed back on site. This is where I came up with the idea of the Gurney-Shield.

The Gurney-Shield was then created which gets workers to wear the correct PPE and keep the Client happy. Currently, it is an industry-standard that the workers do not like wearing face shields due to them restricting vision and continually getting covered in mud.

As the standard face shield is mounted to the hardhat or head it requires the worker to take their PPE off briefly to clean it or adjust it. If your looking for an innovative face shield to improve the safety and working conditions of your workes then the Gurney-Shield is for you

Concept

Gurney-Shield

The Gurney-Shield complies with the highest level of impact protection of Extra High Impact that AS/NZS 1337.1:2010 defines. The Gurney-Shield comes with a certified testing report form a NATA accredited Laboratory.

Compliance

Safework Australia Guide for Managing Risk From High-Pressure Water Jetting Eye protection states "Eye protection suitable for the task, of good fit on the worker and complying with AS/NZS 1337: 2010 (Series): Personal eye protection should always be worn when the worker is near jetting operations. The worker indirect control of the flow of water should as a minimum, wear safety glasses and a face shield complying with AS/NZS 1337. Where liquids which can cause eye damage is being used at the workplace, it may be necessary to use a combination of a face shield visor and goggles or a full hood with a shield."

Design

The Gurney-Shield design needed to adapt to the workers' current work method, which involved them holding the Gurney with two hands but still had the freedom to position the Gurneywithout restriction. This is why I decided to mount the shield to the Gurneys lance, which can then rotate 360 degrees around the lance, allowing the worker to position the shield in the optimal position.
